The Impact of War on Livelihoods :
Livelihood in Conflict
![]() |
War has devastating and long-lasting effects on livelihoods, impacting economies, health, education, and the environment. Conflict often disrupts entire industries, leading to widespread unemployment and income loss. Agriculture suffers, creating food shortages and heightened levels of hunger. Inflation and the collapse of trade networks leave basic goods scarce, pushing communities into deeper poverty.
Health systems are crippled as hospitals and clinics are destroyed, leaving populations vulnerable to diseases and lacking essential medical care. Displaced people, forced from their homes, face harsh conditions in overcrowded refugee camps, while children lose access to education, which harms future generations' potential for development.
Beyond immediate economic and social damage, war also shatters the very fabric of communities. Families are torn apart, social networks disintegrate, and cultural heritage sites may be destroyed, erasing a community’s identity. Political instability often follows, with weakened governance and the rise of armed groups that further disrupt lives.
Environmental destruction compounds the situation, as conflict degrades ecosystems, damages farmlands, and pollutes water sources. The combined impacts of war leave deep scars on societies, prolonging recovery and making long-term development incredibly challenging.
Even after peace is achieved, the ripple effects of conflict can persist for decades, leaving communities struggling to rebuild.
